"Blessed are those who find wisdom; those who gain understanding."
Proverbs 3:13
Welcome!
My name is Carissa Miller and I am a certified professional life coach. I am also the proud (and patient) mother of two daughters, ages 17 and 20 years old. In 2011, my husband and I moved our family to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida after relocating from the great state of Indiana. We share our home with our shelter dog and our two rescue cats. And most of the time, we have a foster cat (or 2 or 3) living with us, also.
Growing up, I guess I was a typical teenager. I felt insecure, awkward, and sometimes downright lonely even though I was an excellent student, a pretty good athlete, and the type of kid teachers enjoyed having in their classes. I knew most of my classmates but never felt popular or included. Most of my insecurities were made up in my head, but needless to say, I bought into those negative thoughts each and every day.
My parents were school teachers and raised my sister and me to live by good Christian values and principles. My upbringing was a straight and narrow path, which I have long-learned to appreciate. I survived the pressures of grade school and went on to attend the Professional Pilot Program offered at Purdue University. I graduated with honors and continued to accumulate flight hours as a flight instructor until I was offered a first officer's position with US Airways. That's when it hit me...I no longer wanted to fly as a career.
You see, I had been doing life backwards! As a teenager, I decided where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do, and who I wanted to hang out with BEFORE I knew who I really was. If I had only identified my true personality when I was a kid, I would have never chosen to go to flight school to become an airline pilot.
By my mid-twenties, it finally dawned on me that I really liked predictable environments, I was not calm under pressure, and I did not like making quick decisions...all major issues if your career is an airline pilot! Simply put, these traits along with many others is how I am naturally wired. So, I abandoned the flying world and joined the business world...a much better fit for my personality!
Throughout my childhood and into adulthood, I unfortunately mastered the art of worrying! At the age of 37, I finally discovered a path of freedom from a life of anxiety. FREEDOM...a beautiful word! My journey with this new found freedom lead me to create the program Thrive. For the past few years, I've been coaching preteens and teenagers and have been blessed to help them discover their true identities, become more tolerant and respectful of others, choose to behave appropriately, and sanely navigate through life's obstacles and difficulties.
After becoming a mother, I refused to dread the teenage years because I could always see the potential in teenagers. I believe everyone has a voice and desires to be heard. I believe everyone should be appreciated for how they are wired. I believe we need to stop judging others simply because they do not think or behave the way we do. And, I believe we need to be more tolerant and respectful of one another.
We all come from different backgrounds and our life stories are all unique. However, there are such things as proper responses, inappropriate behaviors, right approaches, and wrong paths. I created this program so that people seeking wisdom could thrive in the real world. As a coach, I help empower individuals to embrace who they are, bridge gaps and build confidence, and guide them to become a force to be reckoned with!
